Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Claims in the Winter

How to Keep Your Insurance Costs from Rising

Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Claims in the Winter - MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Winters in Missouri can be long with temperatures ranging from mildly to bitterly cold. Kansas City’s average January low is 26 °F and St. Louis’s average January low is 29 °F.  While our agents are here to help our clients with any claim needs; we also want to help clients avoid winter damage to their home.

Losses from snow, ice and freezing temperatures have averaged about $1.2 billion a year, and may be double that amount this year. This article provides useful tips for homeowners to keep in mind during the winter months. Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Claims in the Winter.

Outside Maintenance

  • Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Claims in the Winter - MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Clean out gutters so melting snow and ice can flow freely. This can prevent ice damming, which is what happens when water is unable to drain through the gutters and instead permeates into the house.
  • Install gutter guards to prevent debris from entering the gutter and interfering with the flow of water.
  • Trim trees and remove dead branches. Ice and snow can sometimes become very heavy and could cause weak trees or branches to break free and damage your home.
  • Repair steps and handrails so that visitors on your property are safe and avoid injury.
  • Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations to prevent cold air and moisture from entering your home.

How to Avoid Freezing Pipes & Water Damage

  • Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Claims in the Winter - MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Keep the house warm. Set the thermostat no lower than 65 degrees.
  • During super harsh cold weather, turn on faucets so that a trickle of water continues running through the pipes.
  • Check pipes. Look closely for the presence of cracks and leaks, and have them repaired immediately. Pipes in attics and crawl spaces should be protected with insulation.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect the system against increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Add extra insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. If too much heat escapes through the attic, it can cause snow or ice to melt on the roof. Water then can refreeze, leading to more ice build-up—and even ice dams that can damage your roof.
  • Have a back-up power source. In the event of a power outage, continuous power will keep you warm and help to prevent frozen pipes, or a frozen battery operated sump-pump.

Flooding

  • Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Claims in the Winter - MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Flooding related to melting snow can cause sewer systems to overflow; hence causing raw sewage to back up into the drains in your home. Some carriers offer water & sewer backup coverage.  This coverage is not part of the typical homeowners insurance policy, but may be purchased as an endorsement.
  • Sewer backup is NOT covered with flood insurance. Flood Insurance is a separate policy available from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).  Flood insurance covers floods from tidal surge and overflowing bodies of water.
  • Install a Backwater Prevention Valve. A backwater valve is a fixture installed into a sewer line, and sometimes into a drain line, in the basement of your home or business to prevent sewer backflows.

Wood Stoves & Fire Places

  • Missouri Home Insurance | Avoiding Claims in the Winter - MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Remove combustible items placed near any hart sources. This includes wood stoves and space heaters.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Not only do residential fires increase in the winter, but so does carbon monoxide poisoning—so check that your detectors are in working condition on a regular basis.
  • Have your heating systems serviced. Furnaces, boilers and chimneys should be serviced at least once a year to prevent fire and smoke damage.

What’s in Your Policy?

Most homeowners insurance policies have a deductible that the insured is responsible for paying. And if the claim exceeds the policy’s limits, the insured could be responsible for additional costs.  Licensed agents with MJM Insurance of Fenton will review homeowner policies at no charge. Winter damage could cause insurmountable damage, so it is important to make sure the right coverages are in place.

Loretta Worters, spokeswoman for the Insurance Information Institute, said most standard homeowners’ and renters’ policies cover damage from burst pipes and other winter-related mishaps, including roofs that collapse from the weight of snow and water damage from ice dams.

It’s best to check your policy ahead of time, to make sure you know just what it covers, and what your coverage limits are.

Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance

So Many Options…. What Roadside Package To Choose?

Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000At some point, we all need roadside assistance. Whether we run out of gas, get a flat tire, or slide into a ditch in a snowstorm.  But, not all insurance companies provide the same Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance services. That is why you will get different prices from different carriers.  Each carrier has their own package; this article will explain the various types of benefits that we found from different carriers.

This article is not all-inclusive, but will give you a pretty good idea of the options available and what to ask your agent. These are general policy descriptions to help you understand the different types of coverages. They are not intended to modify any provisions in any contract of insurance.  Example of Roadside Assistance options include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Towing – not all Roadside Assistance plans are open 24/7.
  • Tire Changes – may require that you have the spare tire.
  • Lockouts – open car door or replace the lock for a nominal fee that is not included.
  • Lost-key Replacement – only if the key can be made at the time of service.
  • Fuel Delivery – up to a set number of gallons. A lot of times we see up to 1 gallon of gas.
  • Jump Start Battery Service – free battery test and jump start to get you to the closest garage or your destination.
  • Minor Roadside Repairs – at the site of disablement; e.g.,  loose hose connection, reattach loose parts.
  • Trip Interruption – pays for overnight stay and food if you are stranded while your vehicle is being repaired.

Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Some plans offer extras:

  • Roadside assistance when you’re on your bicycle.
  • Discounts for drivers who own hybrid cars.
  • Coverage for redoing any repair that fails within six months or 6,000 miles.
  • Reimbursement for services you arrange on your own.
  • Coverage for rental car breakdowns.
  • Coverage for you, your spouse, and children under 21 living at home.

Additionally, different carriers offer different pricing structures.  Some providers offer a yearly membership plan and some carriers have a pay-per-use roadside service option.  Pay-per use roadside assistance is typically billed at a higher rate than an annual plan or option in your auto insurance policy.  Average price for pay-per-use ranges between $59 for non-tow services and $129 for towing service.  In fact, some roadside assistance packages restrict the number of tows per year.
When you are researching Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance packages, or talking with your agent, be sure to inquire on the number of miles included in the towing service. Some carriers offer up to 200 miles of towing, while some carriers charge $75 for 50 miles, and only if you are within 100 miles of your home. Furthermore, some towing companies may tow you to a location of your choosing, while others take you to the closest repair shop.  If your Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance coverage lets you choose your towing destination, find out if you will be charged if you exceed mileage limits.

Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Generally, tow truck drivers are contracted by the insurance company.  The insurance provider may exclude liability for any damage, injury or loss resulting from the negligence of the independent service facility.  Independent contractors are solely responsible for their actions. Any arrangements made between the towing company and the insured is considered outside of the covered services and are not covered by the insurance company.

There are many restrictions to Missouri Auto Insurance Roadside Assistance services. Some of them are noted below; however, each carrier is different. Just be sure to ask your agent what services are restricted in your auto insurance policy.

  • Service on taxis, buses, moving trucks, limousines or step.
  • Service to unregistered, untagged or uninsured vehicles or vehicles that are otherwise not legally drivable.
  • Services to vehicles which the service provider has determined to be unsafe or which require heavy duty equipment to safely provide service.
  • Service to a vehicle which is snowbound, including unplowed street or driveways.
  • Service on a vehicle to which a plow is attached.
  • Service to an unattended vehicle.
  • Service for a vehicle located at a repair facility where repairs can be performed.
  • Removal of a vehicle from a closed repair facility.
  • Limited number of tows per disablement.
  • Requests to tow a vehicle from the street to the driveway.
  • Tire service for dual-rear wheel trucks or vans.
  • Towing of utility trailers attached to a covered vehicle.
  • Towing not related to an accident.
  • Delivery of diesel fuel.
  • No coverage for towing as a result of flood or fire.

An example of a specific restriction we found with an insurance carrier is given below:

Trip Interruption expense reimbursement qualifications:  Your vehicle must be involved in an accident in the United States or Canada, 100 miles or more from home, while on a leisure trip planned to include at least 1 overnight stay and, due to the accident (but excluding mechanical failure), your vehicle must be inoperable for a minimum of eight hours.

When we breakdown or need roadside assistance, we don’t have time to think about the restrictions… Am I far enough away from home? … Will my vehicle be repaired in less than 8 hours? … How far will the tow truck driver take me?

Before you buy, think about who or what the various plans cover. This can be more confusing than you think. Some auto insurers consider calls for roadside assistance to be negatives, just like accident claims.  Choose a plan with the most generous towing allowance and trip-interruption benefits, especially if you frequently travel far from home.  We recommend consulting with a professional insurance agent to help you select the best coverage to meet your needs.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages by AIF

Selecting the Right Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages is insurance for damage to a vehicle(s) and bodily injury resulting from an auto accident. Insurance of this type can cover a variety of instances depending on the kind of auto insurance that has been purchased.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Liability

Liability Coverage protects the other person(s) involved with an accident that is your fault.  Liability coverages include Bodily Injury Per Person, Bodily Injury Per Accident, Property Damage and Uninsured Motorists Coverage.

Let’s say for example, you have 50/100/50.  $50,000 is for Bodily Injury, Per Person.  If you should have an accident and a person was severely injured and incurred $75,000 in medical bills, your insurance will only cover $50,000.  $100,000 covers the Total Bodily Injury Per Accident.  This is used when multiple people are injured in the same accident.  So if you’re involved in an at-fault accident and 5 people are severely injured, your insurance will only pay $100,000 total.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This coverage is for bodily injury at the same minimums as those listed for liability coverage. Using the example above, the Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage would be $50,000. This amount protects you if you’re in a car accident and the other driver is at fault – and that driver has minimum liability limits or doesn’t have car insurance! This coverage also provides insurance for injury-related medical expenses and costs associated with repairing damage to your car.

“Although purchasing only the minimum State required Bodily Injury Insurance limits can get you a cheaper auto insurance rate, if you cause a serious accident, you are likely to have inadequate coverage due to the price of cheap insurance.  Many vehicles today have a much higher value than the Missouri minimum Property Damage Liability limits of $10,000.  You would be responsible for any amount of property damage over the minimum limits, if that is the coverage you purchased.  Multiple persons with severe injuries can each have damages of hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.  That’s why it is important to buy more than the Missouri minimum Bodily Injury Insurance limits.”

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Comprehensive & Collision

Many people refer to Comprehensive and Collision Insurance as “full coverage”.  The correct term is “comprehensive and collision”.  Comprehensive and collision coverages are optional; however, more often they are typically required as part of a car loan or lease agreement.  Think about it — when you cause an accident, what is your first thought after you see the damage done to your vehicle?  If you have liability coverage only, you could be left to pay for your own damages out of your pocket.

Comprehensive Insurance Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000Comprehensive will help cover costs of damage to your vehicle that result from an event that is not an accident, such as severe weather or fire, theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, animals or fowl, natural disasters, and all glass breakage.

Collision Insurance Coverage

Collision Coverage pays for damages to your vehicle after a collision with another car or object.  There are other additions you can add to your policy and we will review them with you.  Those are Medical payments, Rental car reimbursement, Emergency roadside assistance and more.

Medical Coverage

Medical coverage is anMissouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000 important auto insurance coverage. Also known as Med Pay, medical car insurance covers the costs (up to a limit) for injuries that you, or your passengers may have when riding in and while loading or unloading the vehicle.  You and your family may be covered as a pedestrian also.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is an extended form of MedPay. PIP may cover expenses that are related to injury, but not necessarily medical, such as lost wages, childcare and funeral costs. PIP coverage is currently required by sixteen states. If you are already insured under a good health insurance policy, then fortunately, you may not need to buy more than the minimum required amount of PIP or MedPay insurance–enough to cover your health insurance deductible or other out-or-pocket expenses such as co-pays.

Missouri Auto Insurance – Optional Coverages

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000There are many optional auto insurance coverages, and some may qualify you for additional auto insurance discounts.  These coverages include Glass Breakage Coverage, Emergency Roadside Assistance Protection, Rental Reimbursement Coverage and GAP Insurance coverage.

You can learn more about these coverage types, and additional coverages by visiting our Auto Insurance page, and by reading the Bodily Injury and Property Damage Coverage pages in your policy.

The Premium

All auto insurance policies involve a premium, which is the payment a customer makes to have auto insurance. Premiums for auto insurance can be extremely divergent and are determined by a number of factors. Gender is the major determinant for auto insurance premiums. Statistically, men are 80% more likely to be involved in an accident, and therefore have a greater need for insurance. Auto insurance premiums for men are typically higher than auto insurance premiums for women. Similarly, teenagers are considered high risk and will have to pay higher auto insurance premiums as well. The auto insurance premium can be reduced if the teenager takes a defensive driving course. Many states require teenagers to take defensive driving courses in order to obtain a driving permit and auto insurance.

The Deductible

It is customary for auto insurance plans to have a deductible that the customer is responsible for before the auto insurance provider offers coverage of expenses. Deductibles can have an effect on the coverage available under an auto insurance plan.

Most drivers are not aware of the risks they are taking when they purchase just the
state minimum insurance that is required by Missouri law.

Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages – Key Points

You may be asked for proof of insurance at any and all of these times: at vehicle registration, at the time of an accident, and any time when driving the vehicle. It is suggested that the owner of the car keeps proof of insurance in the car at all times, instead of on his or her person, so that it can be available at all times, no matter who is driving.

You should never drive without Missouri auto insurance.  Any violations of state law regarding auto insurance could result in a hefty fine, suspension of your driver’s license, and possibly time in jail. The dire consequences of driving while uninsured are not worth the neglect of paying for insurance. The chance that an uninsured driver will avoid detection is slim; he is likely to be caught and strictly punished–not to mention and increase in the cost of insurance for 3 to 5 years.

Visit the Missouri Division of Motor Vehicle website to learn more about Missouri Auto Insurance Coverages.

What is Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage and Why Do You Need It?

Uninsured Motorist Coverage protects responsible drivers, who carry insurance, against those who (for whatever reason) may not have insurance or only have the state minimum required insurance at the time of an accident.

If an insured driver is involved in a no-fault accident with an individual who is uninsured , the insured driver is stuck with the bills incurred from the accident that was not their fault!  It is especially important for drivers to protect themselves against those that may not have auto insurance.

MJM Insurance of Fenton Agents encourage our clients to carry at least the Uninsured Motorist Coverage minimum, if not more depending on your circumstances. We want the best protection for our clients!

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage is now required by Law.  An insurance company cannot issue a contract of automobile liability coverage in Missouri without including Uninsured Motorist Coverage on the policy.

Missouri Auto Insurance TIP:  It is also a good idea to have the same limits for Uninsured Motorist Coverage as you have for bodily injury liability. THIS COVERAGE IS FOR YOU. It pays for your injuries and damage to your car, if another person is at fault and has no or not enough libility insurance coverage.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage  is designed to help drivers pay for the bills associated with a crash that was caused by another person who either doesn’t have auto insurance or has a policy with liability limits that are too low to cover costs associated with a covered loss.  What is your worth?  If you are not properly covered you could suffer great financial loss.
Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000A FREE MISSOURI AUTO INSURANCE RISK ASSESSMENT can help.  As part of our commitment to our clients, MJM Insurance of Fenton provides a free risk assessment to ensure the right protection is in place for you and your family.  We look at your overall worth, what assets you have that could be at risk, and how your family could be affected by a financial loss.

The coverage limits for Uninsured Motorist Coverage protection can range from $20,000 to $1 million.  Our agents consider a number of factors, including how much your car is worth, what kind of medical insurance you carry, and whether you have access to short- and long-term disability protection to ensure you don’t lose out on wages if you’re unable to work.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage offers coverage for bodily injury and can offer coverage for damages to your car. In addition to injuries to the driver, the bodily injury portion of Uninsured Motorist Coverage may also cover injuries to your passengers or family members who are driving the vehicle at the time of such a crash.  All the coverages in your auto policy apply when you are driving, but they also apply when other people are driving your vehicle. The coverages are actually for the car, not the person.  NOTE: If someone is going to be a regular user of your car, that person’s name needs to be added to the policy.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage will also pay for damages to a vehicle that was parked and not occupied when the at fault party is unknown.  This type damage (sometimes called “hit and run” accidents) often occur in parking lots and with vehicles parked along a street curb.  Your auto uninsured motorist coverage will pay for these “hit and run”  damages less a state wide deductible.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000is especially important for Motorcycle drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a motorcycle rider is 35 times more likely to suffer serious injury or death from an accident than occupants in a passenger car. The NHTSA also states that the motorcyclist is rarely at fault when involved in an accident. If you are in a motorcycle accident and the other party has no or insufficient liability insurance, you can face significant costs for an accident you didn’t cause.

In summary, Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage pays for the costs associated with your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance at all. Underinsured motorist coverage covers the gap between what the at-fault driver’s policy pays and your medical expenses when that driver has insufficient insurance.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000For those uninsured , the plea of guilty WILL RESULT in the entry of a conviction on a driving offense. Convictions for offenses will be sent to the Department of Public Safety for entry on your driving record, or to the Department of Natural Resources, and MAY RESULT in the loss of your license by those agencies.

In 2014, the Insurance Research Council News published an article in The Insurance Journal discussing the cost of uninsured motorist claims has risen dramatically in the past decade. Missouri law prohibits an uninsured driver, who is the owner of the vehicle or a driver operating a vehicle with or without permission who is uninsured, from collecting for non-economic damages in a civil action against an insured motorist alleged to be at fault for an accident.  However, the limitation does not apply to passengers in an uninsured driver’s vehicle and does not limit the recovery of benefits provided or economic losses. Furthermore, recovery of non-economic damages in instances where an insured driver who is at fault because of operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol will still be allowed under the new law.

Filing an Accident Report

Statutory reference: Section 303.040, states you must report accidents that happen in Missouri to the Driver License Bureau if:

  • The accident happened less than one year ago,
  • The accident involved an uninsured motorist, AND
  • The accident caused property damage costing more than $500, or someone was injured or killed.

NOTE: If the accident did not cause $500 in property damage or personal injury or death, you may still file an accident report, if there was an uninsured motorist involved.

Missouri Auto Insurance Uninsured Motorist Coverage | MJM Insurance of Fenton | (636) 343-5000

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, the law reads as follows:

  1. An uninsured motorist shall waive the ability to have a cause of action or otherwise collect for non-economic loss against a person who is in compliance with the financial responsibility laws of this chapter due to a motor vehicle accident in which the insured driver is alleged to be at fault. For purposes of this section, the term “uninsured motorist” shall include:

(i) An uninsured driver who is the owner of the vehicle;

(ii) An uninsured permissive driver of the vehicle; and

(iii) Any uninsured no permissive driver.

Such waiver shall not apply if it can be proven that the accident was caused, in whole or in part, by a tort-feasor who operated a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or who is convicted of involuntary manslaughter under subdivision (2) of subsection 1 of section 565.024, or assault in the second degree under subdivision (4) of subsection 1 of section 565.060.

  1.
